Hello there Dreamers!! I’m happy to report school has finally begun! It started to seem like we were possibly the last school to start in this area, but we’ve made it! It feels like just yesterday my oldest started kindergarten, and now she’s in middle school. 7th grade to be exact. Where does the time go?? Don’t ask me why she’s wearing a sweatshirt like it’s a 60-degree day or something lol. She’s tiny, so that means she’s ALWAYS cold. Poor thing.
My beautiful baby boy headed into 2nd grade. I can’t believe it. I mean, how did this happen? Having kids makes life seem like it’s just flying by so fast. School starts and ends, then you spend summer trying to keep them busy and stimulated but just when you feel like summer will never end and the kids are going to strangle each other, school starts all over again.
I figured since summer vacation is now officially over, that I’d touch on all the fun we had. This has probably been the best summer we’ve had in quite a few years. Between the weekly trips to the library to get as much of the summer reading lists done as we could manage, the beach, berry picking and our most recent trip to Port Jeff, well it’s been memorable to say the least!
Port Jefferson Ferry Trip
The last Friday before school, my sister and I decided to plan on taking a trip on the Port Jeff ferry to Port Jefferson, NY. The main attraction would be the ferry ride, because the kids have never taken a boat ride before. This was something we had done as kids and I really only vaguely remember it. The boat ride itself was about half an hour, which was perfect because kids get bored so quickly. This was going to be a device free day besides using the camera on my phone, and the kids didn’t seem to mind it one bit.
When we got off the Ferry, we walked through some of the boutiques and did some window shopping. We stopped into a cute Doggy Boutique (I’m not sure if that was even the name lol) which was chock full of pet treats, toys, and accessories of all kinds. I’ve never been in an actual store that carried so many varieties of dog outfits! Next we decided it was time to eat and knew that seafood was the answer to our hunger. We headed to the Steam Room Restaurant, where we had lobster rolls and the kids had hot dogs because well…kids. It’s been some time since I’ve had lobster, so it was like heaven! We got to eat outside and watch the next ferry come in at that point. Then, we walked around a little more, but knew we wanted to head back soon. Lastly, we made sure to stop in for candy and ice cream at Roger’s Frigate.
We spent maybe 3 hours there total, but it was a great time. We headed back to the ferry for the short trip home, but with a day full of memories. I really hope we can head back sometime soon because the salt water taffy was so good lol!!
Hammonasset State Park
Another fun trip we took in the middle of summer was our day trip to Hammonasset State Park. I talked about the boutique’s we visited, but I didn’t talk about the beginning of our day. This trip we made with my mom, and we had a really nice time. We spent a few hours on the beach, I had a seagull try to steal food the kids had left sitting out while they were in the water, and we also visited the Meigs Point Nature Center.

The Nature Center was small, but we saw some really cool stuff! The biologist that was there showed us how this shell he was holding seemed like just an ordinary shell, until he started humming. As he hummed, a crab slowly started to emerge from it. It was the coolest thing! We got to pet a skate, which we thought was a sting ray at first. There was also a giant lobster and a ton of other fish. I’ll include those pictures in the gallery from that trip below!
So tell me, Dreamers, what kind of trips did you take this past summer?? I’ve realized that we don’t have to take long, far away trips to have a nice summer. What was the best part of your summer? Leave me a comment, I want to hear all about it!!
